And this is an indicator of the state of the environment around us. The Caspian seal is a unique animal: there is no such species anywhere else in the world — the species is endemic. In addition, it is the only marine mammal in Kazakhstan. The animal is also an indicator species — it is sensitive to any changes that occur in the environment.
Although there is no Caspian seal in the Red Book of Kazakhstan, since 2008 this species has been on the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature in the category of endangered. The population of the Caspian seal has decreased by about 6-10 times since the beginning of the 20th century. Now about 100-170 thousand individuals live in the Caspian Sea.

Seal-hunting in the north of the Caspian Sea significantly reduced the number of seals: seal fat and skins were valued. In Soviet times, fishing was concentrated on the fight of squirrels — newborn seal pups, whose fur was highly valued. Fishing has been banned in Kazakhstan since 2006.
Individuals at the moment
Poachers have destroyed more than half of the seals
Now the main factor that threatens the existence of seals is human pressure: shipping, sea pollution, by—catch in fishing nets, habitat degradation, climate change
10 000 kg of garbage is already on the coast
To understand how polluted the Caspian Sea is, you can just walk along the shore. There is not a single square meter that does not have plastic bags, bottles, scraps of fishing nets and their piles. Last autumn, we cleaned up the western coast of Cape Tubkaragan — we collected about 10 tons of abandoned fishing nets and plastic garbage. And this is only on a 55-kilometer stretch.
Fishing nets are one of the problems
Abandoned fishing nets ruin not only seals, but also crayfish with fish. Analysis of fishing nets discarded by the sea showed that every seventh net contained the remains of seals.
During a storm, fishing nets are often torn from anchors, after which fishermen cannot always find them, and poachers are not looking at all.
Dagestan annually discharges about 850 million cubic meters of wastewater into the Caspian Sea, of which about 80 million cubic meters without treatment, the rest are insufficiently treated.
A huge amount of waste is thrown into the Caspian Sea every year
In 2018-2020, Rosprirodnadzor employees recorded numerous violations of the requirements of environmental legislation, issued fines in the amount of more than 3 million rubles. However, the quality of sea waters off the coast of Dagestan remains unsatisfactory.
